Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
On April 8, 1968, former U.S. Rep. John Conyers introduced legislation to create a federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. just four days after the civil rights leader’s assassination.
However, it wasn’t until 1986 that we officially celebrated this national holiday recognizing King’s January 15th birthday.
Since then, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed each year on the third Monday of January. It is the only federal holiday that is “designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities,” according to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Take some time to honor Dr. King’s legacy and give back to your community in whatever way you can!
