Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Today everyone is just a little bit Irish! Parades, festivals, leprechauns, and shamrocks (and of course the color green) are everywhere as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. But the day actually commemorates the death of St. Patrick (who was actually Roman) more than 1500 years ago.
St. Patrick was actually kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken as a prisoner to Ireland. He escaped six years later but returned later in life to be a beloved missionary to the Irish people.
The first feast of St. Patrick was organized and observed by the Catholic Church in 1631, but it wasn’t until more recently that St. Patrick’s Day became a worldwide cultural event.
Today we celebrate St. Patrick and all things Irish on March 17th in both traditional and not-so-traditional ways. Click here to learn more …and have a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
