Today is National Anthem Day
On the evening of September 13, 1812, Maryland attorney Francis Scott Key found himself aboard a British sea vessel during the Battle of Baltimore. He was negotiating the release of Dr. William Beans, a prisoner of war accused of misleading the British troops. While Key’s negotiation was successful, the British troops would not allow him off the ship, fearing he may disclose their battle plans to American forces.
Key and Beans remained on the ship through the night watching the intense attack on Fort McHenry. Expecting American troops to have lost the battle, Key was astounded to see the American flag flying triumphantly over Fort McHenry the next morning. The sight so inspired Key that he wrote the poem that ultimately became The Star Spangled Banner.
On March 3, 1931, nearly 117 years later, President Herbert Hoover signed a congressional resolution making The Star Spangled Banner the national anthem of the United States of America. On National Anthem Day, we commemorate this historic event!
