National Chewing Gum Day

Believe it or not, humans have been chewing gum for thousands of years. Chewing gum made of birch tar bark has been found with teeth marks that are more than 6,000 years old. It is believed that these Neolithic residents of Finland used it for medicinal and antiseptic purposes.  And ancient Mayans chewed chicle from from the sapodilla tree to freshen breath and remove maize from their teeth!

Today, gum can still serve a helpful purpose or simply be a sticky treat. On National Chewing Gum Day, grab your favorite gum and pop a bubble, freshen your breath, or keep your diet in check. Happy chewing!!
