It’s International Traffic Light Day
It’s a brightly blinking light we all face each day. Sometimes we sail through its glowing green without a care in the world and sometimes its red leaves us sitting still for what feels like eternity.
However, the goal of the traffic light is everyone’s safety. And on International Traffic Light Day, we acknowledge the helpful role it plays in daily lives.
On August 5, 1914, the first electric traffic light was installed in Cleveland, Ohio, at the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue. It had four pairs of red and green lights, one for each side of the intersection, and a warning buzzer that indicated when the light was about to change. It had to be operated manually by a controller nearby.
Today’s lights are slightly more advanced, even sensing changes in traffic patterns and adjusting accordingly. But these red, yellow, and green lights still serve their original and very important purpose of keeping us safe!
