Today is Juneteenth
Each year, we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States on June 19th. On this date in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas with an announcement that the Civil War was over and slaves were free men.
The announcement came more than 2 and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and more than two months after General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.
Celebrating Juneteenth grew from the profound experiences that day when many learned of their freedom and from the perseverance required to overcome adversity and achieve fulfillment.
