Today is Labor Day!
On the first Monday of each September, we take a much-needed break from the daily grind. Labor Day is an opportunity to recognize hard-working Americans and their contributions to our nation’s growth.
The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882, with a parade in New York City. Union leaders wanted to create a show of solidarity among workers for the labor movement. The parade was such a success that other communities quickly followed with their own parades, and in 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making it a national holiday.
Today we still mark the holiday with festive parades, family cookouts, or a well-earned day doing nothing at all!
